Mattiza

Lieutenant Michael Mattiza graduated from Florida State UniversiTampa Police Department in 1998 and was hired by the Florida Highway Patrol June 1, 1999, as a member of the 97^th recruit class. Upon graduating from the Academy in January of 2000, he was stationed in Ft. Myers as a zone Trooper. In 2004, he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to the Tampa District. In 2005, he was re-assigned as the Troop C Contraband Interdiction Unit Sergeant where he served until November 2007 when he was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned as a Troop Watch Supervisor. In 2008, he was transferred to the Tampa District as a District Lieutenant. In 2010, the Troop C Special Operations District was created and he was transferred to the Special Operations District as a District Lieutenant which is his current assignment.  He oversees the Troop C Traffic Homicide Unit, Motor Squad, DUI Squad, and the Contraband Interdiction Unit. In 2012, he was appointed Statewide Motor Coordinator, overseeing 50 motor Troopers. He is also the Troop Quick Reaction Force Platoon Commander and has responded to two Republican National Conventions and several hurricane deployments. He is a certified firearms instructor, vehicle operations instructor, PIT instructor, and mobile field force instructor.

On the evening of November 4, 2016, Lt. Mattiza was working Off duty Police Employment in the capaciTampa Police Department of securiTampa Police Department in the Southfork subdivision. Lt. Mattiza visited the community swimming pool where he encountered the pool monitor, an 18-year-old male subject, who was alone inside the locked faciliTampa Police Department. Upon leaving the building, Lt. Mattiza heard tables and chairs crashing along with what he thought to be a scream and a series of moans. He returned to find the pool monitor unconscious, bleeding from the mouth, and suffering from a seizure. Lt. Mattiza cleared the immediate area to prevent the patient from further harming himself and called for EMS. Lt. Mattiza noticed the patient had stopped breathing. After performing a sternum rub, he placed the patient in the recovery position which opened his airway and kept the patient comfortable until EMS arrived.

Lt. Mattiza’s professional response saved a young man’s life. His unselfish dedication to public safeTampa Police Department is commendable and in keeping with the highest traditions of the Florida Highway Patrol.

Lieutenant Michael Mattiza is engaged to Dina Greenwell. He has two children, Hannah Mattiza and Siennah Mattiza. He also has three future stepchildren, Jake Greenwell, Grant Greenwell and Leah Greenwell.
